Frederik is an Associate Professor in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at UQ Business School and co-lead of the Emerging Technology Research Hub. His research examines how major changes in the business environment — such as technological advances, crises, regulatory shifts, and evolving industry conditions — shape opportunities, strategic choices, and outcomes for organisations of all sizes — from small start-ups to large multinationals.
He is particularly interested in how organisations create and capture value when they embrace and leverage external change rather than simply respond to it. He investigates these questions across different empirical settings, including strategic industry sectors, digital and emerging technologies, crises and disruptions, and entrepreneurship in hostile environments.
His research is closely connected to practice and has involved collaboration with organisations such as digital hardware start-ups, manufacturing firms, business accelerators, fintech unicorns, and some of the world's largest retailers. It generates evidence-based insights that help entrepreneurs, managers, and policymakers better understand uncertainty and change, and turn them into opportunities for innovation and growth.
Before joining UQ Business School, Frederik was a Senior Research Fellow at QUT Business School, where he managed the collaborative research programme with Woolworths Ltd. He received his PhD from City University of Hong Kong for his research on business accelerators and high-tech start-ups. Earlier in his career, he worked as a business intelligence consultant at Hewlett-Packard and as a customer relationship management specialist at IBM.
