UQ and Netball Queensland work together to pursue excellence in sport through world-class research and prepare graduates for industry through quality internships.

We work collaboratively to help promote higher education to women and girls through:

UQ students have the opportunity to work with elite female athletes in the Queensland Firebirds team as well as across the operational side of Netball Queensland in a range of areas, including:

  • communications.

Scholarships

When they are not on the court or busy training, several Firebirds players and extended squad members are currently studying at UQ across a range of areas.

UQ student research projects

UQ masters and PhD students have the unique opportunity to work with the Firebirds players and the high-performance department to undertake research projects.

Working so closely with the players, coaching and high-performance staff provides UQ students with the chance to help improve all facets of performance for the team from training load, mental stress and fatigue through to physical performance on the court.

Sport courses and support programs

UQ is endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) as an Elite Athlete Friendly University. The UQ Elite Athlete program operates out of the UQ Sport Academy and supports elite student athletes as they pursue a dual career in sports and study.

Gabi Simpson, Kimberley Jenner, Laura Clemesha and Tara Hinchliffe are members of the Elite Athlete Program.

As part of the UQ Sport Academy UQ sporting scholarship athletes receive a number of services, including:

 

Personal development workshops and resources, including but not limited to Sport Psychology, Media Training, Study Skills and Sports Dietetics (where available).
Free academic liaison and course support from the UQ Sport Academy Personal Development Advisor.
Free UQ Sport Gold Membership, providing access to the UQ Sport Fitness Centre, Athletics Centre, Aquatics Centre, Tennis Centre and group fitness classes.

 

The UQ Sport Competition Subsidy program provides funding to assist talented student athletes with out-of-pocket competition costs to compete at eligible national and international sporting events.
Discounted access to a range of sport science testing, strength and conditioning services through the UQ Sport Academy.
Free access to private academic tutoring (once all course related support has been exhausted and in consultation with the UQ Sport Academy Personal Development Advisor).

Community

The netball community is a passionate and constantly growing community of players, volunteers, umpires, and supporters who, like UQ, recognise the importance of women’s sport.

We work with Netball Queensland to promote the importance of higher education to girls throughout Queensland through several grassroots initiatives and netball carnivals, including the:
