Overview

Background

Dr Martyn McLaggan is an Adjunct Fellow in Fire Safety Engineering within the School of Civil Engineering. He was previously responsible for leading research on combustible cladding and fire performance of building façades. He also coordinated and managed the Cladding Materials Library which involved developing and implementing suitable testing methodologies to provide knowledge to practicing fire safety engineers. Dr McLaggan’s research has predominantly focused on the design of buildings, particularly those involving modern architecture with innovative materials.

Earlier he worked as a Research Consultant and Postdoctoral Fellow at DBI – The Danish Institute of Fire & Security Technology and Lund Technical University where he provided technical expertise for a wide variety of performance-based fire engineering solutions. His primary research project during that time was the development of an intermediate-scale experimental approach to assess the fire risk associated with external insulation façade systems. He previously attained his PhD from the University of Edinburgh on novel fire testing frameworks for Phase Change Materials and hemp-lime insulation, and has an MEng in Architectural Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.
