Areas of responsibility

As Chief Operating Officer (COO), Andrew Flannery acts as Public Officer.

He is responsible for leading the University's financial, physical, human, marketing and communication, legal, management information, corporate operations, commercial activities, information technology and occupational health and safety teams.

The COO also assists the Vice-Chancellor and President with strategic planning and the framework of UQ's highly successful research commercialisation and technology transfer activities.

Biography

Andrew Flannery is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of The University of Queensland. Prior to commencing as COO in July 2021, Andrew was UQ's Chief Financial Officer for 2 years and played a critical role in leading the University’s response to the disruptive financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Andrew brings more than 30 years of professional and global experience to his role at UQ. This includes 15 years in executive roles at Flight Centre Travel Group in Brisbane (2003–2018) and Credit Suisse First Boston in London (1996–2002).

He is also a Director of Unimutual and Chair of the Flight Centre Foundation, Brisbane.  

Andrew grew up in Brisbane and holds a Bachelor of Business (with Distinction) from the University of Southern Queensland. He is a Fellow, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
