Areas of responsibility
As Provost and Senior Vice-President, Professor Mark Blows is the Vice-Chancellor's senior deputy and a critical contributor to the management of the University. The Provost deputises for the Vice-Chancellor in their absence.
The Provost is responsible for building the University’s academic capability and embedding a performance culture in support of UQ's strategic objectives.
The Office of the Provost leads the University budget and strategic planning process, and is responsible for the performance of UQ's faculties and major research institutes.
Biography
Mark received his PhD in genetics from La Trobe University in 1994. He subsequently held an NSERC International Fellowship at York University and an Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship at James Cook University, before joining The University of Queensland in 1998. At UQ he was awarded 2 further Australian Research Council Fellowships.
His major interests are in statistical genetics, with a particular focus on how genetic variance evolves, the distribution of genetic variance in high-dimensional phenotypes, and how genetic variation limits evolutionary change.
In 2011, Mark was elected to the Australian Academy of Science. After serving for 7 years as the Head of the School of Biological Sciences, he became Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) in 2017.
Mark was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research and Innovation) in 2022 before becoming Provost in 2024.
