Overview

Background

Dr Brigid Betz-Stablein is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow based at based at Dermatology Research Centre at the Diamentina Institute. She completed her PhD in Biostatistics in 2014 at Massey University, New Zealand. Prior appointments include a postdoctoral fellowship at QIMR Berghofer, and firstly as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Statistical Consultant at University of New South Wales Sydney. Broadly her research interests lie in applying statistical methods to clinical and medical data. Currently she has an interest in applying artificial intelligence (AI) models to dermatology image data. Dr Betz-Stablein is a member of the International Skin Imaging Colaboration AI working group and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology AI task force.

Research impacts

Naevi, commonly known as moles, are the strongest risk factor of melanoma, and additionally can be precursor lesions to melanomas. There is currently little knowledge of how naevi change over time with very few longitudinal studies in the general population. Dr Brigid Betz-Stablein applies her statistical expertise to support a multi-disciplinary team within the Centre of Research Excellence for the Study of Naevi. The CRE for the Study of Naevi has access to the only VECTRA Whole Body 360, outside the United States. Multiple cameras take simultaneous images which are then stitched together creating a 3D body avatar. Spatial-temporal models will be developed to describe the distribution of naevi across the 3D body surface, as well as how naevi changeover time.
