I am interested in low-dimensional geometric topology, with a focus on knot theory, quantum invariants of 3-manifolds, and knot homologies --especially in relation to concordances and 4-dimensional smooth topology. I recently got interested in the deep connections, usually provided by combinatorial algebraic topology, between discrete structures --such as matchings and discrete Morse functions-- and their smooth counterparts. As a side interest, I try to apply techniques from topological data analysis to knot theory.

Shakes an imaging expert that leads a strong deep learning, artificial intelligence (AI) focused research team interested in medical image analysis and signal/image processing applied to many areas of science and medicine. He received his Ph.D in Theoretical Physics from Monash University, Melbourne and has been involved in applying machine learning in medical imaging for over a decade.

Shakes’ past work has involved developing shape model-based algorithms for knee, hip and shoulder joint segmentation that is being developed and deployed as a product on the Siemens syngo.via platform. More recent work involves deep learning based algorithms for semantic segmentation and manifold learning of imaging data. Broadly, he is interested in understanding and developing the mathematical basis of imaging, image analysis algorithms and physical systems. He has developed algorithms that utilise exotic mathematical structures such as fractals, turbulence, group theoretic concepts and number theory in the image processing approaches that he has developed.

He is currently a Senior Lecturer and leads a team of 20+ researchers working image analysis and AI research across healthcare and medicine. He currently teaches the computer science courses Theory of Computation and Pattern Recognition and Analysis.

Dr Archie Chapman is an Associate Professor in Computer Science in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Archie develops and applies principled artificial intelligence, game theory, optimisation and machine learning methods to solve large-scale and dynamic allocation, scheduling and queuing problems. His recent research has focused on applications of these techniques to problems in future power systems, such as integrating large amounts of renewable power generation and using batteries and flexible loads to provide power network and system services, while making best use of legacy network and generation infrastructure.

Prior to joining UQ, Archie was Research Fellow in Smart Grids at the University of Sydney (2011-2019), and a postdoc fellow at the University of Southampton (2009-2010), where he completed his PhD.

Summary of Research:

  • My current research at UQ is as Professor in this School (teaching AGRC3040 Crop Physiology) and as an Affiliate Professor of QAAFI. Since 2020, with full-time appointment at UQ, my research portfolio has included multiple projects in applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence into the ag domain. This area is developing rapidly and across UQ, I am engaging with faculty in multiple schools (ITEE, Maths and Physics, Mining and Mech Engineering) as well as in the Research Computing Centre to develop new projects and training opportunities at the interface of field agriculture and these new digital analytics.
  • My career research has been around genetic and environment effects on physiology of field crops, particularly where drought dominates. Application of quantitative approaches (crop simulation and statistical methods) and phenotyping (aerial imaging, canopy monitoring) to integrate the understanding of interactions of genetics, growth and development and the bio-physical environment on crop yield. In recent years, this work has expanded more generally into various applications in digital agriculture from work on canopy temperature sensing for irrigation decisions (CSIRO Entrepreneurship Award 2022) through to applications of deep-learning to imagery to assist breeding programs.
  • Much of this research was undertaken with CSIRO since 1996. Building on an almost continuous collaboration with UQ over that time, including as an Adjunct Professor to QAAFI, Prof Chapman was jointly appointed (50%) as a Professor in Crop Physiology in the UQ School of Agriculture and Food Sciences from 2017 to 2020, and at 100% with UQ from Sep 2020. He has led numerous research projects that impact local and global public and private breeding programs in wheat, sorghum, sunflower and sugarcane; led a national research program on research in ‘Climate-Ready Cereals’ in the early 2010s; and was one of the first researchers to deploy UAV technologies to monitor plant breeding programs. Current projects include a US DoE project with Purdue University, and multiple projects with CSIRO, U Adelaide, La Trobe, INRA (France) and U Tokyo. With > 8500 citations, Prof Chapman is currently in the top 1% of authors cited in the ESI fields of Plant and Animal Sciences and in Agricultural Sciences.

Jen Jen Chung is an Associate Professor in Mechatronics within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Queensland. Her current research interests include perception, planning and learning for robotic mobile manipulation, algorithms for robot navigation through human crowds, informative path planning and adaptive sampling. Prior to working at UQ, Jen Jen was a Senior Researcher in the Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) at ETH Zürich from 2018-2022 and was a Postdoctoral Scholar at Oregon State University researching multiagent learning methods from 2014-2017. She completed her Ph.D. on information-based exploration-exploitation strategies for autonomous soaring platforms at the Australian Centre for Field Robotics in the University of Sydney. She received her Ph.D. (2014) and B.E. (2010) from the University of Sydney.

My research explores how Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies enable users to better understand and interact with complex data. I also focus on the engineering and evaluation of interactive visualisation systems and the design of Augmented Reality interfaces for industry applications. I have authored 60+ publications in top-ranked Human Computer Interaction and Information Visualisation conference proceedings and journals, including in ACM CHI, ACM UIST, ACM ISS, IEEE InfoVis/TVCG, IEEE VR.

In 2021 and 2022, I was nominated Australia’s Field Leader researcher in Computer Graphics (The Australian Research magazine yearly ranking).

Yi Cui received his B. Eng. and M.Eng. degrees from Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China, in 2009 and 2012, respectively, and received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, in 2016.

Dr Cui has been a Research Associate in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA since 2016. Currently, he is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Queensland, Australia. His research interests include wide-area monitoring and control, data analytics and cyber-security of smart grids, condition assessment and fault diagnosis of power transformers.

Shane Culpepper is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Queensland in St. Lucia, Australia. Before joining the University of Queensland in 2023, Professor Culpepper held a continuing academic position at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Melbourne in 2008. His research focuses primarily on building better Search and Recommendation Systems and is primarily interested how to responsibly integrate efficient and scalable generative AI models for search, recommendation, and question answering. Professor Culpepper’s work has applications in a number of downstream applications for Legal, Health, real estate speculation. He has been instrumental in founding the AI Research Network and the Research Center for Enterprise AI at the University of Queensland.

Over his 17 year career, Professor Culpepper has supervised 19 PhD students and co-authored more than 140 peer reviewed papers with 132 different research collaborators on problems that range from core basic research, such as algorithm efficiency and scalability, to practical real world problems on building and deploying new machine learning algorithms for search and recommendation systems. While often technical, his work is always user-driven as humans are the main consumers of this technology. This user-centric research focus has led to several papers on controlled user studies which guide the development of better evaluation techniques which model human behaviour. In the last 5 years, Professor Culpepper has been a program co-chair for international conferences such as SIGIR and CIKM, and co-organized conferences such as WSDM and SWIRL. Professor Culpepper previously held an ARC DECRA fellowship in 2013 as well as an RMIT Vice-Chancellor's Principal Researcher fellowship in 2017. Before joining the University of Queensland. Professor Culpepper was the founding director of the Centre for Information Discovery and Data Analytics at RMIT University. In total, he has been a chief investigator on 11 research grants totalling ~$3.8 Million AUD.

Dr Caitlin Curtis is a research specialising in responsible AI, applied ethics, and emerging technologies. She leads national collaborations on AI governance and digital rights, shapes public policy and discourse, and created one of Australia’s first Responsible AI university courses.

Dr Curtis is a recipient of the 'ABC Top 5 Scientist Media Residency Award', and the Australian Institute of Science & Policy Tall Poppy Science Award', recognizing excellence in both research and science communication.

Teaching

  • Caitlin currently teaches the UQ Master of Business Analytics course: Responsible Artificial Intelligence - which looks at the ethical, legal, and social issues relating to AI and automated systems.
  • She also lectures into Responsible Management for the Global Economy, particularly around the ethical and responsible management of artificial intelligence and similar technologies.

She also coordinates and moderates the UQ AI Collaboratory's 'Ask Me Anything about AI' series, which is a unique forum that brings together panellists with technical expertise in artificial intelligence, along with experts from across social science, communication, policy, or law to answer audience questions and spark multidisciplinary discussion around important topics relating to AI systems, including: AI social media predictions, facial recognition systems, misinformation and AI, and deep learning.

Dr. Gianluca Demartini is a Professor in Data Science and an ARC Future Fellow at the University of Queensland, Australia. His main research interests include Information Retrieval, Semantic Web, and Human Computation. His research is currently funded by the Australian Research Council, the Swiss National Science Foundation, Meta, Google, and the Wikimedia Foundation. He received Best Paper Awards at the ACM SIGIR International Conference on the Theory of Information Retrieval (ICTIR) in 2023, AAAI Conference on Human Computation and Crowdsourcing (HCOMP) in 2018, at the European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR) in 2016 and 2020, and the Best Demo award at the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) in 2011. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications including papers at major venues such as WWW, ACM SIGIR, VLDBJ, ISWC, and ACM CHI. He is an ACM Senior Member, ACM Distinguished Speaker, and a TEDx speaker.

Before joining the University of Queensland, he was a Lecturer at the University of Sheffield in UK, post-doctoral researcher at the eXascale Infolab at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, visiting researcher at UC Berkeley, junior researcher at the L3S Research Center in Germany, and intern at Yahoo! Research in Spain. In 2011, he obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the Leibniz University of Hannover in Germany focusing on Semantic Search.

Pratap is an IP Strategist and Patent researcher. He has expertise in dealing with Intellectual Property issues in relation to emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 3D bioprinting and synthetic biology. He is currently a Postdoctoral fellow at TC Bernie School of Law, University of Queensland, Australia. Pratap pursued his PhD from the Centre for Law and Genetics, University of Tasmania, Australia where his research was focused on "Patenting issues related to Bioprinted tissues and Bioinks." In 2018, he was invited by Govt. of Japan to assist the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) in harmonizing Japanese Patent Law in relation to AI. In 2017, he completed his Master of Law (LLM) in Intellectual Property from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva and the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. He is the recipient of the prestigious International Fellowship offered by WIPO. He holds a Master's degree in Genomics from the Central University of Kerala, India and a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Chemistry from Acharya Nagarjuna University, India. Dr Chelsea Dobbins is an Associate Professor within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at The University of Queensland. Before relocating to Australia, Dr Dobbins was a full-time continuing Senior Lecturer within the Department of Computer Science at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the UK (2013-2018). She has a background in Software Engineering and expertise in Digital Signal Processing, Applied Machine Learning and Human-Computer Interaction. Her research focuses on the detection of emotion using smartphones/wearable sensors and personal informatics. This includes areas such as lifelogging, affective computing, pervasive computing, digital health, human computer interaction, machine learning, mobile computing, mobile/wearable sensors, human digital memories, signal processing, and physiological computing. Her research has been supported by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for work related to developing a mobile lifelogging platform to detect negative emotions during real-life driving. In 2016 she received an ACM Computing Review Notable Article award for work related to mining multivariate temporal smart mobile data.

Skye Doherty is a senior lecturer in the School of Communication and Arts at UQ. She is an expert in using creative and design-led research methods to explore alternative futures and address wicked problems. Her work has responded to issues in the news media, law, disaster resilience, and energy and water security, among others, and has led to both conceptual and practical outcomes.

Her design artefacts include the NewsCube, an award-winning storytelling tool, Vim, a tangible energy story, a suite of concepts for community-led bushfire management, and Wicked Thinking, an independent magazine. She has developed frameworks for journalism innovation and used codesign methods to improve the experiences of injured workers, a project that led to legislative change.

Her current and recent projects include the GEF-funded Coral Reef Rescue project and the ARC Training Centre for Climate-Resilient Water. She is the current Treasurer of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) and is a member of UQ’s Human-Centred Computing research group in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Previously, she led the Global Change Scholars Program in the UQ Graduate School – a year-long PhD experience focused on industry research collaboration and impact.

She came to academic research after an international career as a journalist, and her experience spans leading international media companies as well as startups.

Dr. Naipeng Dong is an expert in automatic formal verification of security and privacy in cryptographic protocols, Android applications and blockchain systems.

She has developed efficient automatic formal verification techniques with a focus on attacker reasoning and analysis on cryptogrpahic protocols, developed algorithms to verify fault-tolerance of systems with dishonest participants, and analysed systems in e-auction, e-health, Single-Sign-on authentication, and blockchain consensus.

Dr Daniel Edge-Garza is a horticulture and crop geneticist at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation at the University of Queensland, Australia. His research interests are to develop and translate tools using genome-wide DNA information for breeders and growers to make meaningful decisions. Daniel’s PhD awarded by the University of Queensland in 2024 focused on identifying global G x E patterns to assist with improved germplasm-environment matching for commercial deployment. Before joining QAAFI, he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences in 2005 and Master's Degree in Biotechnology in 2009 both at California State University, Fresno. From 2008, he worked as a faculty associate in research for tree fruit breeding at Washington State University becoming recognized worldwide for his efforts to streamline the deployment of DNA tests for pome and stone fruit breeding programs. He has also collaborated with the Genome Database for Rosaceae since 2018 to curate genomics data and train breeders on how to upload and access their data on the Breeding Information Management System.

Assoc Prof Fred Fialho Teixeira is an architect, media artist and associate professor at University of Queensland, School of Architecture, Design and Planning and director of the UQ VisLab. He has been working in the fields of computational architecture, biodesign and immersive environments for the last 20 years. He has been awarded the Dean's Fellowship from the University of California where he initiated is PhD and developed innovative biological-based design strategies at the California Nano Systems Institute. He's an alumni of the Architectural Association, School of Architecture (AA) and accredited architect by Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Portuguese Chamber of Architects (OA) and also practiced for high profile offices such as Zaha Hadid Architects. Presently his research work on bio-design and spatial computation combines the use of mixed reality, advanced manufacturing and biomaterials to enable the next generation of built environments

Gordon holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, which focused on the application of machine vision, image processing and machine learning algorithms for modelling grade in froth flotation systems.

Gordon spent ten years working for the Victorian Government developing technical computing and modelling solutions. These included the development of the Environmental Systems Modelling Platform, a tool that aims to bring multiple environmental models and datasets into a single easy to use software package, and the development of the Native Vegetation Regulations Tool, to calculate the interactions between proposed clearings and models of rare and threatened species, and thereby determine the required offset credits. More recently, Gordon worked as a data scientist at the Victorian Centre for Data Insights, where he worked with a team focused on delivering innovative data driven solutions across the government sector.

Gordon now applies his data analytics, modelling and technical computing skills at the JKMRC where he works with the Advanced Process Prediction and Control group developing tools for improved time series analysis and visualisation of industrial data and comminution process models.

Dr Forbes has an extensive background in applying optimisation methods to industrial problems. He spent over 20 years working in industry before returning to academia in 2010. Dr Forbes now focuses on building Mixed Integer Programming models for industrial applications and specialised techniques for solving difficult Mixed Integer Programming models.

Marcus Gallagher is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His research interests are in the foundations of artificial intelligence, including optimisation and machine learning algorithms. He is particularly interested in understanding the relationship between algorithm performance and problem structure via benchmarking. His research includes cross-disciplinary collaborations and real-world applications of AI techniques in areas such as healthcare and computer networks.

Dr Gallagher received his BCompSc and GradDipSc from the University of New England, Australia in 1994 and 1995 respectively, and his PhD in 2000 from the University of Queensland, Australia. He also completed a GradCert (Higher Education) in 2010.
