Professor Jason Ferris, is the Director of Research and Statistical Support Services (RASSS), University of Queensland. While providing service primarily to the Faculty of Medicine the service is expanding to support other organisation units. He is also a leading research academic at the Centre for Health Services Research (CHSR) where he is the Program Leader for Global Substance Use and Mental Health (GSUMH) unit. He holds an honorary professorial role at Turning Point, Victoria (2018-) and is also the Chief Data Scientist for the Global Drug Survey (2013-). Since 2019 he has held a ministerial appointment as an Advisory Council Member to the Queensland Mental Health Commission and is an interRAI Fellow (interrai.org).
Since 2020, Professor Jason Ferris, in collaboration with Dr Dom Gorse (Director of UQ's Data Science CRP) and many others from QCIF and UQ, have been working on the development and deployment of KeyPoint - an innovative data infrastructure, data governance and digital solution enabling researchers to access, manage, analyse and share sensitive research data in a scalable, fully governed and highly secure environment. The work has received a number of accolades. In 2023, The University of Queensland recognised the value of KeyPoint winning the Award for Excellence in Innovation. In 2022, the Faculty of Medicine recognised his commitment and leadership to the University awarding him and the team the Innovators of the Year Award. Professor Ferris and Dr Gorse are now developing a UQ solution for a Trusted Research Environment (UQ-TRE). Professor Ferris has received other recognition as well. In 2021, the Faculty of Medicine recognised the outstanding support of RASSS with a Service Excellence Award. In 2020, The University of Queensland recognised his contributions to his research field: he was awarded the Faculty of Medicine Leader of the Future Award (Academic) and The Director's Choice Award for contributions to the Centre for Health Services Research. In 2019, he was awarded The Outstanding Mid-Career Researcher within the Centre for Health Services Research and was also chosen as a finalist for the Faculty of Medicine Leader of the Future Award (Academic). Additionally, across the Faculty of Medicine, his Research and Statistical Support Service, was nominated for a Service Excellence Award (2019 and 2020). In 2015, he received the University of Queensland, Early Career Researcher Award within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science. In September, 2014, he received a Highly Commended Early Career Researcher Award within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science.
He has been involved in a number of key projects: The Queensland Evaluation of the Alcohol Fuelled Violence Policy (QUANTEM), The Overarching Evaluation of the National Support for Child and Youth Mental Health Program (CHYME), the evaluation of ProjectSTOP (a decision-making national database for pharmacists aimed at preventing the use of pseudoephedrine based products as a precursor in the manufacture of methamphetamine), and a national review of the links between random breath testing and alcohol-related road traffic accidents. Jason has over 20 years of social science and public health research experience. He has a well-established publication record with a strong focus on alcohol and drug research and public health. With a Master degree in biostatistics he has well developed and expansive quantitative methods skills and a broad range of experience in many of the facets of both social science and medical research. In 2014 his PhD on alcohol epidemiology was conferred.
Previously, as a senior statistician at the Institute for Social Science Research he developed and taught a number of training models in research methods and statistical analysis as part of the Methods for Social Analysis and Statistics (MFSAS). Since its inception in 2012 he has been course coordinator and trainer for a number of these training modules (see below). From 2016-2018 he was the Director of MFSAS. Between 2016-2017 he was also the ISSR Co-postgraduate Coordinator.
Jerzy Filar is Emeritus Professor of Applied Mathematics. Jerzy is a broadly trained applied mathematician with research interests spanning a spectrum of both theoretical and applied topics in Operations Research, Stochastic Modelling, Optimisation, Game Theory and Environmental Modelling. Professor Filar co-authored, or authored, five books or monographs and approximately 100 refereed research papers. He has a record of research grants/contracts with agencies and research institutes such as NSF, ARC, US EPA, World Resources Institute, DSTO, FRDC and the Sir Keith and Sir Ross Smith Foundation. He is editor-in-chief of Springer’s Environmental Modelling and Assessment and served on editorial boards of several other journals. He has supervised or co-supervised 29 PhD students. Jerzy's Erdos Number is 3.
Dr Forbes has an extensive background in applying optimisation methods to industrial problems. He spent over 20 years working in industry before returning to academia in 2010. Dr Forbes now focuses on building Mixed Integer Programming models for industrial applications and specialised techniques for solving difficult Mixed Integer Programming models.

I completed my PhD, supervised by Dr. Jan Engelstaedter, investigating host shift dynamics of parasites within a host clade. In this project I am was interested in understanding the long-term dynamics and consequences of host-shift dynamics, while taking into account the evolutionary relationships between host species. I was interested in identifying predictable patterns in the distribution of pathogens using statistical and mathematical modeling.
Currently, I am a postdoctoral researcher working at the University of Queensland under Dr. Christine Beveridge. I will be creating computational models of plant hormone signalling in order to make predictions on the phenotypic outcomes of plant species.

Marcus Gallagher is an Associate Professor in the Artificial Intelligence Group in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. His research interests are in artificial intelligence, including optimisation and machine learning. He is particularly interested in understanding the relationship between algorithm performance and problem structure via benchmarking. My work includes cross-disciplinary collaborations and real-world applications of AI techniques.
Dr Gallagher received his BCompSc and GradDipSc from the University of New England, Australia in 1994 and 1995 respectively, and his PhD in 2000 from the University of Queensland, Australia. He also completed a GradCert (Higher Education) in 2010.
Cecilia is an associate professor in the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland. After completing undergraduate studies at Universidad de Guanajuato / CIMAT and PhD at the University of Maryland, College Park, she held research fellowships from the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) and the Australian Research Council (ARC). She has also held a Promoting Women Fellowship by UQ.
Cecilia is an expert in the field of random dynamical systems (RDS). Along with collaborators, she has developed a framework for the study of transport in RDS, relying on the so-called Lyapunov–Oseledets spectrum. Her key contributions include the development of tools and algorithms to (i) approximate coherent structures and Lyapunov exponents, (ii) establish limit laws and quantify fluctuations, (iii) develop a thermodynamic formalism and (iv) optimise mixing. Her work also includes significant advances on data assimilation, metastable and dynamical systems.
Cecilia has received significant research funding from the Australian Research Council, including a 2016 Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) a 2018 ARC DP and a 2022 ARC DP as lead CI. She has led or co-led competitive applications for conference funding (20-60 participants), including a 2023 MATRIX Workshop, co-funded by the MATRIX-Simons Collaborative Fund, an Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) funded Mathsfest Workshop (ANU, 2016), a Banff International Research Station Workshop (Canada, 2015) and a BIRS-CMO Workshop (Mexico, 2018).
Cecilia has delivered over a hundred invited lectures, seminars and colloquia in almost twenty countries, including invited/keynote addresses at the ANZIAM 2023 annual conference, 2014 International Workshop Set Oriented Numerics (U Canterbury, NZ), 2017 Workshop Ergodic Theory, Algorithms & Rigorous Computations (U Warwick, UK), 2017 EMALCA (Latin-American & Caribbean Math School, Mexico) and participation at invitation-only workshops at AIM (USA), BIRS (Canada), Bernoulli Center (Switzerland), CMO (Mexico), CIRM (France), Centro De Giorgi (Italy), Lorentz Center (Netherlands) and MATRIX (Australia).

Professor Joseph Grotowski completed his Bachelor of Science with Honours in Mathematics at the Australian National University in 1985. He then moved to New York for postgraduate studies in Mathematics, and completed an MS in 1987 and a PhD in 1990 at the Courant Institute, NYU.
He held a number of positions in Germany, and completed his Habilitation at the Friedrich-Alexander Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg in 2001. He took up a position as an Associate Professor at the City College of New York of the City University of New York in 2003, and returned to Australia to take up a position as a Senior Lecturer at UQ in 2005. He was promoted to Associate Professor from 2010, and Full Professor from 2013.
His main research area is geometric and nonlinear partial differential equations.
He served as Head of the Mathematics Discipline from 1 January 2010 until 30 April 2014. From 1 May 2014 he has been Head of the School of Mathematics and Physics. As Head of School, he is responsible for ensuring that the School delivers a high standard of research and teaching, as well as engagement with the broader community, across our disciplines of mathematics, physics and statistics. He is also responsible for providing and fostering strategic leadership within the School, as well as for financial management of the School’s budget and management of the School’s resources.
He is a former Board Member of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute, and serves on the advisory Board of the MATRIX Research Insitute. He has been active in CSIRO Mathematicians in Schools for a number of years.
I am a Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Data Science, at School of Mathematics and Physics, The University of Queensland. I obtained my BSc degree in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, from Beijing Normal University in 2006. I obtained my MPhil and PhD degrees from City University of Hong Kong in 2008 and 2011 respectively, where I was working as a research fellow from Oct 2011 to Feb 2013. During Feb 2013 -- Aug 2014, I was working as a postdoctoral associate at Department of Statistical Science, Duke University. Before joining UQ in Jan 2022, I worked at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. My research interests cover statistical learning theory (kernel methods, stochastic gradient methods, support vector machine, pairwise learning, online learning, error analysis, sparsity analysis, and the implementation of algorithms), mathematical data science, and their applications to artificial intelligence, immunological bioinformatics, systems biology, and computational social science.
I bring industry and academic experience in working on quantum error mitigation, quantum error correction, and quantum control theory to enable quantum computing demonstrations on near-term hardware. I am currently investigating the feasibility of combining error mitigation and error correction techniques with quantum machine learning algorithms at the University of Queensland. With Sally Shrapnel and partnering with the Queensland Digital Health Center (QDHeC), we are analysing the operational robustness of quantum machine learning, with an eye to digital health use-case discovery and testing. Prior to this, I worked on execution of dynamic circuits for error mitigation and quantum error correction applications at IBM Quantum (US) for three years. My work resulted in 3 patents and being recognised as one of IBM Research’s Top Technical Contributors in 2023 globally. I have also designed classical algorithms for noise filtering and prediction for trapped ions at the Quantum Control Laboratory in the University of Sydney, winning ARC EQUS inaugural Director’s Medal in Australia in 2019.
Dr Anthony Halog: Expert in Circular Economy, Life Cycle Thinking, and Sustainable Systems Engineering
Dr Anthony Halog leads interdisciplinary research on circular economy transitions, life cycle assessment, and AI-enabled sustainable systems at The University of Queensland. With a mission to co-design decarbonised and circular solutions for complex global challenges, his work advances the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supports UQ’s strategic priorities of research translation, education transformation, and community enrichment.
His research spans bioeconomy, green hydrogen, waste-to-energy, and climate policy systems, with over 130 scholarly outputs and fellowships from OECD, DAAD, JSPS, and NREL. He actively secures research funding, supervises HDR and EMCR researchers, and partners with industry, government, and international universities to foster innovation and impact.
Dr Halog teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs on sustainable consumption, industrial ecology, and life cycle thinking. His teaching is informed by real-world research and student-centred pedagogies, with consistently strong SECaT feedback. He mentors diverse cohorts and champions experiential, inclusive, and future-focused education.
He serves on international panels and university committees, contributing to UQ’s mission through leadership, policy advice, and community engagement. Dr Halog exemplifies UQ’s values of excellence, sustainability, and global citizenship.

Dr. Mark Hickman is the TAP Chair and Professor of Transport Engineering within the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland. Prof. Hickman has taught courses and performed research in public transit planning and operations, travel demand modelling, and traffic engineering. His areas of research interest and expertise include public transit planning and operations, urban transportation planning and modelling, and the development of sustainable transport innovations and policies.
I obtained my PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of Adelaide in the area of Convex Sets with Lattice Point Constraints. Following my PhD, I was a mathematics lecturer at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. In 2012, I joined UQ as a teaching focused academic in the School of Mathematics and Physics.
I have extensive teaching and administrative experience at the secondary-tertiary interface. Prior to my PhD, I taught senior high school mathematics in Singapore, where, as head of the mathematics department, I oversaw the delivery of the senior high school mathematics curriculum for over 2000 students. In my current role as Director of First Year Mathematics, I have led and implemented course improvements. These include the development of a comprehensive range of graded learning resources for key first year mathematics courses and specific initiatives to address the secondary-tertiary mathematics transition. One such initiative that has been especially rewarding is the Support Learning Tutorial (SLT), an intervention program that I designed and implemented to support at-risk first year students. SLT students have consistently outperformed the general cohort in pass rates and quality of results. Another significant initiative which I led is the MATH1051 (Calculus and Linear Algebra I) UQ2U Blended Learning Project. This project introduced changes to the delivery of MATH1051 in 2019, through the integration of online and high-value on-campus activities. A key innovation is the creation of a complete set of videos for MATH1051 and the implementation of collaborative workshops. The success of the MATH1051 project has led to the subsequent redesign of several large first year mathematics courses.
The impact of my teaching and research has been recognised through eight teaching awards (five UQ and three national awards). I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy Fellowship (SFHEA) and 2022 Australian University Teacher of the Year.

Valentin was awarded a PhD from the French National Institute of Higher Education in Agricultural Sciences and the University of Montpellier (France) in 2018. His thesis focused on methodological developments for genetic differentiation analysis in the Next Generation Sequencing era in a neutral and adaptive context. Since 2019, he works as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Queensland in the Program in Complex Trait Genomics group under the supervision of Professor Peter Visscher. His current research focuses on studying the within and between-population genetic variation in human complex traits.

Dr. Matthew Holden is an applied mathematician using modelling to improve environmental outcomes. Mathematical tools unify his research across several diverse topics in biodiversity conservation, theoretical ecology, fisheries, and other branches of natural resource management. He is especially interested in how we improve the well-being of human populations at least cost to biodiversity.
Dr. Holden currently serves as the Vice President of the Resource Modeling Association, an international society of economists, mathematicians, and envrionmental scientists unified via their passion for modelling and other quantitative methods to solve the world's hardest natural resource management problems. He also is the Deputy Director of Research for the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science (CBCS), and is also affiliated with the Centre for Marine Science (CMS).
Dr. Holden was awarded his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Cornell University, where he used dynamical systems, optimal control, and statistical theory to recommend policies to improve the management of invasive species, agricultural pests, and fisheries. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, where he won the University Medal, working on the effect of habitat fragmentation on the persistence of endangered species.
Dr Min-Chun Hong has solved a number of open problems and conjectures on harmonic maps, liquid crystals and Yang Mills equations in the areas of nonlinear partial differential equations and geometric analysis. He has collaborated with top mathematicians such as Professor Mariano Giaquinta (SNS-Pisa), Professor Jurgen Jost (Germany), Professor Michael Struwe (Zurich), Professor Gang Tian (Princeton) and Professor Zhouping Xin (Hong Kong).
Some highlights of his research after joining UQ in 2004 are:
In the area of harmonic maps, collaborated with Giaquinta and Yin (Calc. Var. PDEs 2011), he developed a new approximation of the Dirichlet energy, yielding a new proof on partial regularity of minimizers of the relax energy for harmonic maps as well as for the Faddeev model. The method leads to solve an open problem on partial regularity in the relax energy of biharmonic maps by him and Hao Yin (J. Funct. Anal. 2012). Based on the well-known result of Sack and Uhlenbeck in 1981 (Uhlenbeck 2019 Abel Award Winner), with collaboration of Hao Yin in 2013, he introduced the Sack-Uhlenbeck flow to prove new existence results of the harmonic map flow in 2D and made new application to homotopy classes.
Collaborated with his PhD student L. Cheng (Calc. Var. PDEs 2018), he settled a conjecture of Hungerbuhler on the n-harmonic map flow.
Bang-Yen Chen in 1991 proposed a well-known conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds: Any biharmonic submanifold in the Euclidean space is minimal. Collaborated with Fu and Zhan (Adv. Math 2021), he confirmed Chen’s conjecture for hypersurfaces in R5 with n=4.
In the area of Yang-Mills equations, with Gang Tian (Math. Ann. 2004), he established asymptotic behaviour of the Yang-Mills flow to prove the existence of singular Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections, which was used to settle a well-known conjecture of Bando and Siu. Collaborated with Tian and Yin (Commun. Math. Helv. 2015), he extended the Sack-Uhlenbeck program to Yang-Mills equations and introduced the Yang-Mills alpha-flow to approximate the Yang-Mills flow in 4D. More recently, collaborated with his PhD student Schabrun (Calc. Var. PDEs 2019), he proved the energy identity for a sequence of Yang-Mills α-connections.
In the area of liquid crystals, he (Calc. Var. PDEs 2011) resolved a long-standing open problem on the global existence of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system in 2D. Collaborated with Zhouping Xin (Adv. Math. 2012), he solved the global existence problem on the Ericksen-Leslie system with unequal Frank constants in 2D. Collaborated with Li and Xin (CPDE 2014), he resolved a problem on converging of the approximate Ericksen-Leslie system in 3D.
Dr Huang has an Honours degree in Science (Advanced Mathematics) from the University of Sydney, and a PhD (Statistics) from the University of Chicago on a McCormick Fellowship. He previously lectured at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Technology Sydney, before moving to the University of Queensland where he is currently the Statistics Major Convenor and Mathematics Honours Coordinator.
Dr Phillip Isaac is a mathematician interested in algebraic structures, particularly those related to quantum integrable systems.
Phillip received his PhD in mathematics in May 2001 from UQ. The title of his thesis was "Quasi Hopf superalgebras and their dual structures".
He worked as a JAVA programmer/cryptographer for about 9 months before undertaking a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Tokyo, Japan. His project was entitled "Symmetries in quantum spin chains".
After his return to Australia in September 2003, he began casual employment at UQ, working as a first year tutor and developing course materials.
His current research activities involve developing the constructive representation theory of Lie (super)algebras, quantum groups and related structures, and its utility in application, particularly to quantum integrable systems.
