The expansion of vocabulary: Developing memory representations of new words (2005)
Abstract
How do readers add new words to their vocabulary? There has been little investigation of the acquisition of lexical representations in memory and how they are influenced by encounters with words. A programmatic series of experiments investigates how presentation encoding and language variables interact with individual skills to shape the expansion of vocabulary during reading. Evidence on these issues will be invaluable in directing the development of theories of visual word identification. Furthermore the information provided by the project will contribute to programs assisting young adults in achieving the high literacy standards required for participation in the information age
