How to prepare
Application
If you're an external applicant, you will need to create an account in our job application system when you apply.
If you're a current staff member, higher degree by research student or title holder, you should log in to your existing account within our job application system.
We recommend that you:
- read the job ad carefully to understand what you need to submit to apply for the role
- submit your application by the deadline listed in the advertisement
- tailor your application for each position to stand out from the crowd
- nominate at least 2 referees who you have worked with closely in a professional capacity. Ideally, one should be your current or most recent supervisor or manager.
Each job ad will indicate if we can provide visa sponsorship. If you don't hold valid working rights in Australia, you will only be eligible for positions that are open to sponsorship.
Interview
If your application progresses, you will be invited for an interview with a selection panel.
UQ conducts all interviews in an accessibility-friendly environment. Email us at talent@uq.edu.au before the interview if you have any accessibility requirements, so we can accommodate your needs.
For academic roles, you may be asked to present a research seminar or a mock lecture. For other roles, you may be asked to complete a brief task.
If you aren't in Brisbane at the time of your interview, please contact us. We can usually facilitate an online interview.
Preparing for the interview
We recommend you:
- read the position description and think of examples that show how you meet each criterion
- research the area you’re applying to and prepare some questions for the panel
- ensure you know where the interview is located and allow extra time to find the room.
If you need a copy of the position description email us at talent@uq.edu.au and include the job reference number in the subject.
Pre-employment checks
If you are the preferred candidate, we will:
- contact you before we contact your 2 references to ask about your qualifications, experience and suitability for the position.
-
send you an email to complete a pre-employment check, where you’ll be asked to provide documentation to confirm your right to work in Australia (for example, your passport, birth certificate or visa).
For some roles we may need additional checks, including education verification, criminal history screening and professional registrations. If so, you’ll receive an email from our third-party provider explaining how to complete this step.
Outcome
Successful candidate
If you are the preferred candidate we will:
- contact you and discuss details, such as start date and salary
- send you a formal contract in the UQ candidate portal. You will be notified via email about how to access your contract.
We recommend that you don't resign from your current employment until you have received and accepted a formal employment contract from UQ.
Unsuccessful candidate
If your interview is not successful:
- a member of the interview panel will let you know and will provide feedback
- your application may be held on file (if you met the interview criteria) so that we can notify you if another role becomes available.
Updates or feedback on your outcome
We try to provide prompt updates on the status of all applications. However, if you have not heard back and would like an update, email talent@uq.edu.au.
Due to the volume of applications we receive, we can't provide individual feedback for candidates who do not progress to the interview stage.
Relocation support
Your offer of appointment will outline if you are entitled to any relocation assistance.
