UQ's commitment to eradicating modern slavery
Our vision – to provide knowledge leadership for a better world, through educating the brightest minds and amplifying research that creates positive change – would not be achievable without upholding the highest levels of integrity and transparency in its commitment to human rights.
Our response to modern slavery
Modern slavery involves the use of coercion, threats or deception to exploit people and deny them their freedom. It includes crimes such as human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, child labour, and deceptive recruitment practices, and it still occurs in Australia today.
As a top 50 global university, UQ is committed to taking strong, sustained action to address the risks of modern slavery in our operations and supply chains. We have established clear frameworks and processes to help identify and reduce these risks. Our efforts are backed by senior leadership, supported by internal champions, and guided by a cross-functional working group that has led this work since 2021 and continues to do so.
Each year, UQ publishes a Modern Slavery Statement outlining the actions taken by the University and its controlled entities to identify, prevent and manage modern slavery risks across our activities and supply chains.

Students at risk
Some students face greater risk of exploitation – especially those learning English, with limited income, few support networks, or little knowledge of Australian labour laws.

Annual statements on modern slavery
In line with UQ’s legislative requirements under the Modern Slavery Act (2018), the University publishes an annual modern slavery statement. This statement outlines activities we undertake to engage the UQ community and reduce risk in the supply chain and university operations over the reporting period.
