Surface Engineering of Cast Magnesium Alloys for Innovative High Performance Packaging Robots (2012-2015)

Abstract

The project aims to develop surface modification techniques for cast magnesium alloys to improve their surface durability. This will enable light metal alloys to be used for the making of robot structural components. The use of cast magnesium alloys will significantly reduce robot weight, and thus solve a critical technical problem in the development of high performance low-cost packaging robots that will replace the currently used heavy, slow and costly industrial manufacturing robots in packaging automation. The research will also contribute to materials science through studying the bonding mechanism of cold spray and the effect of catalysts on surface alloying treatment.
