Methane and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Sewers - Understanding, Modelling and Mitigation (2012-2015)

Abstract

Strong evidence has emerged showing substantial methane and nitrous oxide emissions in sewer networks. These emissions are currently neither accounted for nor mitigated. Through integrated field monitoring and trials, fundamental laboratory investigations and advanced mathematical modelling as well as real-time network control, this project will deliver (1) detailed field data for accurate accounting of methane and nitrous oxide emissions from sewers; (2) mathematical models capable of predicting their production and missions in sewer environment, and (3) innovative strategies for reducing their emissions. The project will provide strong support to the water industry to deliver water and wastewater services with minimum carbon footprint.
