Hydraulic erosion of granular structures: Experiments and computational simulations (2012-2014)

Abstract

Australia's major Geo-technical challenges involve the interaction of soil and water. Hydraulically induced erosion processes are destructive causing enormous damage to infrastructure, especially during flood events. Our research involving experiments and computational simulations will address the full range of instabilities leading to failure of a representative structure. The structure is chosen as representative of a wide range of Geo-technical structures yet is relatively easy to reproduce for the purpose of experiments and computational simulations. The project benefits from existing NCRIS and MNRF sponsored Software and HPC infrastructure at ESSCC/UQ as well as the experimental facilities at the UQ Golder Geo-technical Center.
