Business Process Decomposition (2013-2015)

Abstract

When re-designing business processes, analysts often struggle to meaningfully break down complex processes into subprocesses that can be managed or improved in isolation. This project will develop a theory for decomposing complex business processes into sets of more manageable processes. It will extend a theory of information representation to develop a set of principles for good process decomposition, and test the principles in several experiments. Based on the theoretical work, methodological guidelines will be developed that aid practitioners to effectively and ef¿¿¿ciently produce good models of organizational processes, to aid decision making in organizational re-design or systems development.
