Australian Stage Comedians 1915-1930: Configuring a Comic National Identity (2005-2007)

Abstract

By studying selected stage comedians particularly Pat Hanna (the ex-Digger) Nat Phillips (the city larrikin) and George Wallace (the boy from the bush) the project aims to show how an idea emerged in the crucial post-Gallipoli years that the ordinary Australian was a product not just of stereotypes of war class and location but of an over-arching *distinctive comic attitude to life*. The principal outcome will be scholarly articles and a book that will add significantly to our knowledge of how these comedians made a crucial contribution to one of the most commented-on features of Australian identity
