Microwave Detection of Structural Degradations in Maritime Industry (2019-2022)

Abstract

This project will develop a new underwater microwave inspection technology as the first gold standard system and method for autonomous and accurate detection of structural defects withing Australian marine infrastructure, thereby completely alleviating the need for manual-labour-based detection, which is currently the only available inspection method in this field. This will be achieved by combining innovative microwave technology (featuring multi-modal waveguides, polarimetric radars and latest imaging algorithms) with the ground-breaking Artemis smart robotic scanning and unmanned marine vehicle (UMV) implementations, thereby significantly expanding the scope and quality of structural information obtained in harsh sea environments.
