Spatial modulation of nitric oxide production in angiogenic endothelial cells (2008-2009)

Abstract

The formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) is critical for the support of tumor growth. Endothelial cell migration is essential in this process. This project will test whether spatial regulation of nitric oxide production controls endothelial cell (EC) migration. The endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is tightly regulated by the scaffolding protein caveolin-1. We have already shown that caveolin-1 is polarized in migrating EC in vitro and in vivo experiments using molecular tools that we have already developed. Our long term goal is to elucidate the role of caveolin-1 in angiogenesis, prociding insight for novel cancer therapies.
