Coral Reefs Innovative Satellite Image Mapping Techniques (2006-2008)

Abstract

Coral reef scientists and managers lack means to regularly map the type and condition of corals within the large and inaccessible environments that make up coral reefs. This information is critical for understanding the health of coral reefs and developing management plans to enable their sustainable use. Our project integrates new satellite image based reef mapping programs to produce a internationally applicable reef mapping method that will deliver information directly matched to reef management needs. An international team of scientists will critically assess these approaches using an innovative ecological and management model and image/field data set to deliver the most optimal method(s)
