Chemical and Biochemical Characterisation of Novel Iron Chelators with Therapeutic Potential (2007-2009)

Abstract

Effective anticancer chemotherapy is limited by resistance of some cancers to established drugs. In this ARC Renewal, we will examine extensively the biological coordination chemistry of iron chelators that exhibit pronounced and selective anti-tumour activity and the mechanisms that induce these effects. Our objectives are: 1. To determine the chelator structural features necessary for anti proliferative activity. 2. To characterise the coordination compounds of our novel chelators and to determine if transmetallation is involved in their anti- proliferative activity. 3. To assess the biological activity of novel second-generation chelators and their complexes.
