Overview

Background

Dr Li is a Research Fellow at Australian Centre of Water and Environmental Biotechnology (ACWEB). He received a bachelor's degree in Automation from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and his PhD from the University of Queensland in 2021. His research is the multidisciplinary study of urban water management and automation control, including model predictive control, real-time optimisation, IoT sensor network, high-performance computing for sewer networks, water distribution systems, and wastewater treatment plants.

Dr Li's research grounds in the exploration of natural sciences and he is dedicated to translating knowledge into practical engineering applications. His vision for digital water management not only integrates cutting-edge data technology into the water industry but also advances computing science through its "wisdom in water" approach. He has published refereed journal papers on vastly different fields of Environmental Engineering and Computer Engineering. He is currently the Associate Editor of Water Research X. He is the lecturer of [WATR7104] - Sewer Networks - Design, Operation and Maintenance and [WATR7107] - Wastewater Modelling and Control.

His multidisciplinary research projects are established in close collaboration with industry partnerships. Dr Li is a recipient of the Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship. His study about the real-time control of chemical dosing in sewer networks is a winner of IWA Global Project Innovation Award in 2024. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Water Association (IWA).

Dr Li is available to supervise Master and PhD projects. Welcome to reach out if you are interested in exploring the world and developing practical technologies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Automation and Control Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology
  • Masters (Research) of Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology
  • Doctor of Philosophy, The University of Queensland

Research interests

  • Urban Water System - Real-time Control

This study aims to develop novel real-time optimisation algorithms, supported by efficient data-driven predictive models (as opposed to computationally demanding mechanistic models), to achieve network-wide RTC. This online optimisation-based approach will deliver performance unachievable by the conventional rule-based controllers.

  • Urban Water System - Digital Twins

This emerging term refers to virtual replicas of real infrastructure assets. We aim to develop novel approaches to incorporate digital twins in data analytics, in support of smart monitoring, sewer functional analysis, real-time control and long-term decision making

  • Urban Water System - Smart Monitoring

This study aims to systematically assess, in real sewer environments, the reliability and longevity of these sensors for long-term applications; develop novel machine-learning methods to verify sensor data quality, identify faults in data/sensors, and reconstruct the missing/incorrect data, with support of digital twins, thus providing data cleaning; develop ‘soft’ sensors to estimate critical variables that cannot be cost-effectively measured.

  • Urban Water System - Real-time Functional Analysis

This project aims to develop novel, digital-twin-supported data analytics to determine the functional states of the sewer network. The sensor data are expected to reflect both the inherent, normal behaviour of the system as well as the behaviour induced by ‘abnormal’ functional states.
