Research interests

  • Public Reason

I am interested in how it might be that the institutions and conventions which structure a diverse society could be justifiable to all of the different people within that society. This question goes back at least to Hobbes, but has taken on new forms and new urgency with the arrival of the environmental crises, globalisation, and social media.

  • Naturalistic Ethics

I am interested in restoring the neglected dialogue between moral philosophy and moral psychology, hopefully for the benefit of both disciplines.

  • Divisions of Responsibilities

I am interested in how a society’s division of labour and division of authority allows responsibilities to be transferred, contested, and neglected.
