Contribution of surf zone wind stress to storm surge inundation (ARC Discovery Project DP0877235 administered by Griffith University) (2008-2010)

Abstract

Project aims to improve the accuracy of storm surge forecasting by determining the presently unknown contribution of wind stress acting on surf zones. Storm surges have significant social and economic impact, leading to catastrophic loss of life in severe cases. Australia has extensive shallow coastal regions exposed to cyclonic storm surges. National and State agencies reoly on accurate forecasting for disaster planning and the design of critical infrastructure. Data will be obtained from rapid response field instrumentation and novel laboratory experiements. These will provide the surf zone wind profile and surface roughness required for improved national forecasting capability.
