Adaptive evolution of coleoid (cuttlefish, octopus, squid) venoms (2011-2015)

Abstract

Australia is home to a remarkable number of venomous animals. Despite their evolutionary uniqueness and potential bioprospecting importance, coleoid (cuttlefish, octopus, squid) venoms remain under-investigated. Using multidisciplinary techniques, this project will characterise the full biochemical diversity of these unique venoms. This will result in better understanding of the fundamental nature of the venoms, leading to disparate outcomes including evolutionary interpretation, novel investigational ligands or discovery of potential lead compounds for use in drug design and development. Of particular interest will be the biochemical changes necessary for subzero adaptation by Antarctic and Arctic venomous octopuses.
