Improving the growth rate and flesh quality of cultured Barramundi: Investigating the effects of temperature, diet, and population (2006-2009)

Abstract

This project aims to develop technologies for the improved culture of barramundi Lates calcarifer by examining the effects of early thermal regimes, diet, and population on muscle cellularity, growth rates and flesh quality. Promising results from a pilot study undertaken at the University of Queensland will be expanded on a commercial level with support from participating farms. Goals of this research include increasing growth rates and flesh quality (texture and taste), thereby increasing production levels and value of the crop. Additionally, technology developed will be easily incorporated into existing hatchery/growout framework, allowing maximum accessibility to the barramundi farming industry.
