Temperature Adaptation Of Fish Spermatozoa: An Integrative Approach (2006)

Abstract

Although countless studies have explored the physiological consequences of environmental temperature variation, the relationship between temperature and reproductive performance remains poorly understood. Studies of fish spermatozoa offer a unique and novel system for investigating the reproductive consequences of variation in the thermal environment. Despite the obvious importance of spermatozoa to an organism s reproductive success, virtually nothing is known about the thermal biology of spermatozoa. I will address this paucity of knowledge by investigating the acute, phenotypic and evolutionary thermal responses of fish spermatozoa, representing one of the most comprehensive examinations of thermal adaptation for any biological system.
