Reactive ground / Self heating of pyrites
Pyrite can slowly heat up on its own when it reacts with air and moisture. This natural process, known as self-heating, occurs because the chemical reaction releases heat. If the heat builds up, it can sometimes lead to spontaneous burning in materials like coal or mine waste. It can also produce acidic water that affects the environment. Controlling air, moisture, and temperature helps reduce the risk of self-heating and its impacts.
