Hyperaccumulator plants
I have been working with hyperaccumulator plants for the last six years. These plants can accumulate metal(loid)s in their tissues up to 100 or 1000 times more than ‘normal’ plants. More than 700 hyperaccumulator species were discovered: 523 Ni, 53 Cu, 42 Co, 42 Mn, 41 Se, 20 Zn, 7 Cd, 5 As, and 2 Tl. My interest is in understanding the metal pathways and speciation in these plants. This information is critical for remediation and metal recovery through phytoextraction.

Mine waste geochemistry
Before the environmental law was enforced, mine closure and rehabilitation were not compulsory. As a result, there are approximately more than a million abandoned mines worldwide. My research investigates the mobility of toxic and valuable metal(loid)s.
