Estimating use of tobacco and nicotine products through wastewater analysis (2019-2023)
Abstract
This project aims to improve estimates of population consumption of tobacco products by systematically measuring the excretion factors of specific human biomarkers in urine samples from a representative sample. We will combine advanced human pharmacokinetics study with outstanding analytical facilities and excellent statistical expertise to address critical gaps in our knowledge of biomarkers for tobacco products for wastewater-based epidemiology. The information will be used to provide accurate, cost-effective estimates of tobacco consumption that will allow authorities in public health and law enforcement to better monitor changes in population use, and impact of tobacco control measures.
