Overview
Background
Children deserve the best of our healthcare. As Professor and Chair in Paediatric Nursing, conjoint between the University of Queensland (UQ) and Children’s Health Queensland, Amanda is working to optimise health service delivery for children in hospital, so they are able to receive the treatment they need, without complications. She also aims to improve the capacity, capability and excellence of consumer-focussed, powerful research across paediatric healthcare.
At UQ, Amanda leads the Paediatric Nursing and Patient Safety research group, which is based across the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work and the Children's Health Research Centre.
Amanda is also co-Chair of the Children's Inpatient Research Colloraborative of Australia and New Zealand (CIRCAN), which facilitates hospital-based paediatric research studies across metropolitan, regional and rural hospitals in Australasia. She is also Director of Child UnLimited, an Australian network of researchers, clinicians, advocates and families with a shared vision: to improve the clinical care and quality of life of children, adolescents and young adults living with a chronic illness or disability.

Research impacts
Amanda is a current National Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigator (2023-7), and previous Fulbright Scholar (2021-22). Her research program is supported by NHMRC and Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grants, and as Chief Investigator in an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence (Wiser Wound Care). Her research focuses on the prevention of complications associated with paediatric hospital admissions, especially those related to central venous access devices (for which she is ranked the #1 expert, globally [central venous catheters; ExpertScape]).
This includes leading projects such as the:
- Preventing adverse events during paediatric cancer treatment: A multi-site hybrid RCT of catheter lock solutions (the CLOCK trial)
- Preventing InfusAte injuries Throughout a Child's Hospitalisation (the PATCH trial): A Type 1 Hybrid Randomised Controlled Trial
- Development and implementation of the Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Infusion Catheters in Paediatrics (mini-MAGIC)
- Innovation to improve the experience and outcomes of central venous access devices in paediatrics and cancer care: the IV Passport
- Peripherally inserted central catheter Innovation to reduCe Infections and Clots (the PICNIC trial)
