Background
Dr Retamal-Walter is Lecturer in Speech Pathology in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences at The University of Queensland. Building on over 15 years of professional experience, Dr Retamal-Walter's interest in Information and Communication Technologies relies on the use of technology to provide person- and family-centred services directly into the home environment, which is a person's natural communication environment. His research interests also include the use of simulation, virtual/augmented reality, and other innovative approaches in the preparation and training of students from speech pathology, allied health, and other health and education disciplines.

Research impacts
Dr Retamal-Walter has presented his work at several conferences in Chile, Latin America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Dr Retamal Walter works closely with industry partners in Australia and the professional bodies of Speech-Language Pathology in Chile, Australia, and New Zealand to improve service delivery to people with communication difficulties of all ages. Dr Retamal-Walter's work on telepractice engagement has been awarded Wiley's Top Cited Articles in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 and has been used in the training and professional development of education and allied-health clinicians through Speech Pathology Australia (SPA), the Early Childhood Intervention Australia (ECIA) Victoria/Tasmania Body, and CanChild in Canada.
He represents The University of Queensland's Centre for Hearing Research (UQCHEAR) at the WHO’s World Hearing Forum, and actively advocates for and promotes ear and hearing care for all people across the lifespan. Dr Retamal-Walter’s research has been used as an evidence-based resource for training students and clinicians in Chile, Canada, Brazil, and Australia.
As a result of Dr Retamal-Walter's collaboration with the School of Biomedical Engineering (Universidad de Valparaiso, Chile) in the design and development of a novel device to measure the non-nutritive sucking of hospitalised newborns, he was awarded an invention patent in 2020 (Patent #201603353; see National Institute of Industrial Property [Chile], www.inapi.cl).
