A desire for things: an investigation of the inter-relations of art making, consumption and exchange among Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara. (2013-2016)

This project proposes an investigation of the consumption practices of artists from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in South Australia using Anthropological methods. It investigates the artists' use of their earnings as a way of examining Anangu's changing attitudes to and ideas about materiality, money and exchange. The particular focus is on the desire that Anangu have to acquire consumer goods, an important and under researched part of their lives. The period under scrutiny is the present. Outcomes will contribute to the formulation of new approaches to the problem of poverty and well being for Indigenous people living in, and originating from, remote areas.
