Overview

Background

Dr Stina Oftedal is an accredited practicing dietitian and postdoctoral research fellow at the Queensland Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Research Centre (QCPRRC). Stina completed her undergraduate degree at Queensland University of Technology in 2010, and completed her PhD at the University of Queensland in 2016. Stina's PhD explored the association of modifiable health behaviours (diet and physical activity) on growth and body composition in preschool-aged children with cerebral palsy, and this continues to be the focus of her postdoctoral work. She also has an interest in infant feeding and diet quality.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy of Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetics, The University of Queensland

Research interests

  • Growth and body composition in children with cerebral palsy

I completed my PhD on the association of diet and physical activity and growth and body composition in children with CP and continue to work in this field.

  • Diet quality in children with cerebral palsy

I am currently undertaking multiple research projects looking at the diet quality of children with cerebral palsy.

  • Feeding difficulty in infants at high risk of cerebral palsy

I am leading a project to determine feeding difficulties in infants who have been diagnosed as 'high risk of CP' to inform interventions to support these babies and families with the introduction of solids.

Available projects

  • Dietary intake and school readiness outcomes in children with cerebral palsy

This research opportunity focuses on validating measures of energy intake and dietary quality in children with CP, and investigating the association between nutrition outcomes and school readiness for children with CP. The successful candidate would undertake measurement of energy intake via weighed food records and total energy expenditure via doubly labelled water in a sub-group of the children participating in the School Readiness Project. This PhD project would be suitable for a dietitian/ nutritionist (CIs Dr Kristie Bell, Dr Stina Oftedal).

  • Infant feeding diet intervention in children at high risk of cerebral palsy

  • Infant feeding diet intervention in children at high risk of cerebral palsy

Co-design an infant feeding intervention for babies with cerebral palsy

Launch your PhD career by being part of a study to develop an infant feeding intervention for babies who often do not meet typical feeding milestones.

    Why you should join us:

This is an exciting opportunity to develop an innovative infant feeding intervention for children who have been identified as being at high chance of receiving a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

    · Gain an understanding of feeding skills in infants with cerebral palsy.

    · Work with infants with cerebral palsy and their families to understand what their needs are when it comes to introducing solids in terms of education and support.

    · Co-design an intervention with parents of children with cerebral palsy, speech therapists and other clinicians involved in the care of infants at risk of cerebral palsy.

    · Access comprehensive training in systematic review, basic and advanced biostatistics and mentorship from internationally recognised experts in the field.

    Prerequisites

    · A bachelor’s degree in nutrition or dietetics with a minimum class IIA honours or two years relevant research experience, or

    · Master’s in Nutrition and Dietetics with a GPA >5.65

  • Improve diet quality in children with Cerebral Palsy

Improve diet quality in children with Cerebral Palsy
