Engaging students: issues of difference, distribution and recognition in schools (2010-2012)

Abstract

This study aims to explore relationships between the equitable distribution of academic outcomes and the valuing of diversity within schools, both important purposes of schooling (MCEETYA, 2008). It is particularly concerned with students located in disadvantaged areas of Queensland as evidence suggests that such students are not served well by the schooling sector in terms of either purpose. By working closely with teachers, analysing their practices, and undertaking interviews with teachers, students, former students and school leaders, the kinds of pedagogy, assessment and curricula necessary to improve the educational outcomes and quality of school experience of students from disadvantaged backgrounds can be determined.
