Diffusion - the key to performance in organic optoelectronic devices (2012-2014)

Abstract

Optoelectronic devices based on organic materials, such as organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) used in displays, photovoltaic (PV) devices, and sensors for explosive vapours are becoming a commercial reality. Understanding the movement of molecules (diffusion) between the layers that make up these devices is key to improving their performance - for OLEDs and PV devices the diffusion of materials is detrimental for their operation while for sensors it is a requirement. In this project we aim to understand the diffusion processes and develop ways to control and optimise them for each application. The results will lead to improved technologies and provide paths to ensuring that these devices reach their potential.
