Assessment, Academic Integrity and GenAI

In my role as Associate Professor in Higher Education, in the Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation (ITaLI) I contribute to the UQ strategic priorities, with leadership responsibilities in assessment, academic integrity and generative artificial intelligence. My purpose is to empower institutions, educators, and students to navigate the complexities of generative AI with confidence and ethical competence. I aim to foster a culture of integrity that enables students to thrive as critical thinkers and ethical leaders, committed to serving the common good in a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

Teaching and Learning Research

Current Projects

  • Student Perspectives on AI in Higher Education' a collaborative effort of four major Australian Universities: Monash, the University of Queensland, Deakin and the University of Technology Sydney, which aims to understand higher education students' relationships with GenAI in study and assessment (2024-2026). Project website: aiinhe.org

Past Projects

  • Time poor, strategic or vulnerable? Understanding how and why students use online 'buy, sell or trade' file-sharing/tutoring services and the ethical impacts for tertiary institutions' Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia Inc (HERDSA) grant 2021-2022 Associate Professor Christine Slade (CI) with Dr Guy Curtis UWA and Sheona Thomson QUT.
  • Faculty Assessment Practices in Response to COVID-19: opportunities for innovative futures D2L/ASCILITE grant 2020-2021 with Dr Kathryn Coleman and Kate Mitchell (UniMel) and Professor Patsie Polly (UNSW).
  • 'Embedding Digital Health Knowledge, Capabilities and Attributes into University Nursing and Midwifery Curriculum' funded by a UQ New Staff (teaching-focused) Start Up Grant - Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) grant. The aim of the project was to collate the current scholarly literature and best practice available in preparing healthcare graduates to be digitally apt through innovative curriculum. A scoping review of current literature was published in Nurse Education Today and the results of a pilot study with nursing and midwifery students about their perspectives and experiences in using digital systems whilst on placement was published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing.
  • 'Professionalisation in Academic Development: Exploring learning designer roles in a changing higher education sector', funded by the Council of Australian Directors of Academic Development (CADAD now CAULLT). This project explored contemporary concerns about the attraction and retention of suitable learning designers by university central teaching and learning units to meet diverse roles and employment conditions. A national survey to learning designers and directors of central teaching and learning units yielded over 120 responses. The results of the survey can be found in the Ascilite 2019 (pp. 272-281) and HERDSA 2019 (pp. 94-104) Conference proceedings

Available projects

  • Ethical and Effective Use of Generative AI in Higher Education Teaching and Learning

This project offers students the opportunity to investigate practical and ethical questions arising as generative AI becomes embedded in everyday tertiary educational practice. Relevant topics may include how educators can scaffold responsible use of GenAI across curriculum or exploring examining what academic integrity means in this new age. You will develop valuable research and analytical skills while contributing to a project that influences teaching practice and student experience. This is an excellent opportunity for a postgraduate student who is tenacious, curious, values integrity in education and wants to make a tangible contribution to evidence-informed approaches that help educators integrate GenAI responsibly while creating learning environments where students use GenAI ethically, think critically, and engage in genuine, high-quality learning.
