Research interests

  • Evaluation of a 10-site trial of social prescribing for families and young people experiencing social disconnection in QLD

    Professor Dingle is leading a multi-disciplinary team of researchers (psychology, social work, health economy, health policy) to evaluate this single arm trial of Link Worker mediated social prescribing through Neighbourhood Centres in 10 sites around QLD. Half of the sites are in outer metropolitan areas, and the other half are in regional and rural areas. The evaluation will include quantitative, qualitative, health economic and implementation aspects (funded by a tender from QLD Department of Families to ASPIRE and UQ, 2025-2027, supplemented by 2 Winter scholarships and 1 Summer scholarship supported by UQ Health, Medicine and Behavioral Sciences faculty and the School of Psychology. Outputs: protocol available as a preprint. Interim report submitted to QLD Gov March 2026. Final report due March 2027.

  • Sharper Minds: A Mental Health Prevention Package for University Students Targeting Multiple Self-Care Behaviours

    Supported by $780K 2023-2028 strategic funding from UQ VC and Office of the DVC(Academic) and seed funding from UQ Health and Allianz Care (2020-2022). Professor Dingle leads this interdisciplinary collaboration between students, researchers (UQ, Griffith University), staff of UQ Student Services, and GPs and other health professionals at UQ Health Centre. The package features co-designed materials to increase students' mental health literacy, offering a self-monitoring e-tool, 8 online self-paced modules, and 6 short courses to improve health and self-care behaviours to prevent mental health problems and promote academic success. The project has strong research and practice training components, including Honours, Masters and PhD thesis students and Masters in Psychology, Dietetics, and Exercise Physiology students who deliver the courses as part of their supervised practicum placements. Outputs: 8 scholarly papers, 5 reports, conference symposia, invited keynote addresses, 2 PHD and 4 Masters thesis completions, 20+ Honours thesis completions.

  • Groups for Belonging: a parallel cluster randomised controlled trial of a group-based loneliness intervention for people attending treatment for AOD use

    Professor Dingle is CIC on this project funded NHMRC $1.29M over 4 years to support a cluster randomised controlled trial of the Groups 4 Belonging program (Dingle, Ingram, Haslam & Kelly, 2019) in multiple AOD services in NSW, VIC, QLD and ACT.   • Enhancing neurodivergent student success through wellbeing: Protocol for a quasi-experimental evaluation of the Tuned In Connect program across three Australian universities

    Tuned In (Dingle, 2009) is a group emotion regulation intervention that uses participant selected music listening to evoke emotions in session. It has been evaluated with adolescents in mainstream schools, at risk adolescents in community services, and in international and domestic university students. Neurodivergent student partners helped to adapt the program to meet their interests and needs. This 5-session Tuned In Connect program is currently being evaluated with neurodivergent university students at the University of QLD, Melbourne and Newcastle, supported by a $150K grant from the Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success (Curtin University). Outputs to date: protocol paper, conference symposium, Masters thesis.
