Risk factors for sessile serrated adenoma (2014-2016)

Abstract

The understanding of colorectal cancer biology has made a major leap forward in recent years with the discovery that as many as one-third of all colorectal cancers may originate from sessile serrated polyps, which were previously thought to have no malignant potential. The very limited evidence to date suggests that specific diet and life-style related factors may influence the risk of sessile serrated adenoma and that these may be different from risk factors for conventional adenoma. Several lines of evidence suggest that high exposure to folate may increase risk of bowel polyps and colorectal cancer.
