Keeping safe on campus

UQ is committed to your personal safety. 

You can help too by: 

  • being aware of your surroundings
  • keeping yourself and others safe
  • reporting all incidents and suspicious behaviour to Security, no matter how minor. 

UQ’s personal awareness safety program offers services and resources to help everyone play their part in keeping campus safe.

Security is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

What we do to keep everyone safe 

Sexual respect 

UQ takes sexual respect seriously and provides:

  • support and information for survivors of sexual assault and misconduct
  • options for reporting sexual assault and misconduct if you choose to
  • information about consent, and UQ's policies and procedures.

Security patrols 

UQ Security patrols all campuses 24/7 to: 

  • assist students, staff and visitors
  • ensure facilities are used by authorised people only
  • lock external building doors
  • provide a visible security presence. 

Security officers wear: 

  • dark grey shirts with security identification embroidery  
  • black long pants
  • black wide-brim hats with 'Security' identification.

They also carry UQ Authorised Person ID cards. 

CCTV monitoring 

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across all UQ campuses and sites. It helps Security monitor activity and respond to safety and security issues.

After-hours safety bus 

A free safety bus runs after 6pm on the St Lucia campus, covering campus and nearby off-campus areas. 

Safety escort service 

Security can escort you to your car or public transport at night, free of charge. 

Available at: 

  • St Lucia and Gatton campus, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Herston campus, Monday to Friday, 1am to 10.45pm
  • Long Pocket site, Monday to Friday, 7am to 2.15pm and 3pm to 10.15pm. 

To avoid delays, contact Security in advance if you know when you’ll need an escort.

Get to know your campus early and plan your travel routes. 

Here’s how to stay safe in different situations: 

Walking on campus 

Using public transport 

  • Use the after-hours safety bus when on campus at night.
  • Check timetables to avoid long waits alone.
  • Stay in open, well-lit areas near transport stops.

Parking on campus 

  • Lock your vehicle and park in well-lit areas.
  • Move your car closer to your location if staying after dark.
  • Don’t leave valuables visible.
  • Avoid putting personal ID on your keyring.
