The Property and Facilities Division is responsible for the construction, refurbishment and maintenance of UQ property, facilities and grounds.

St Lucia
Please be aware of upcoming works to upgrade a section of pathway outside the end of trip facilities at Building 21C.

Work details
Pathway upgrades will be carried out in stages to improve accessibility as part of the Union Complex redevelopment. This includes installing a non-slip walkway, vehicle-safe reinforced concrete slabs and general landscaping.
Temporary fencing in the area will be extended to enable pathway upgrades to be carried out safely.
Access to the Building 21C end of trip facilities will remain available via an alternative entrance that is located at the entrance to the Union Complex on level 1 (located underneath the stairs and opposite the lift – see map).
Property and Facilities will work with the UQ Union (UQU) to coordinate safe access for REDROOM deliveries. A temporary walkway will be in place for UQU staff between the Building 21C fire stairs to the Level 1 coldroom for the duration of works.

Work details
- The pedestrian footbridge connecting the P4 Carpark and Glasshouse Road Precinct will be closed during the works.
- Pedestrian access routes on the southern side of the building will be temporarily affected.
- Access beneath the footbridge will be restricted within the designated work area.
- Pedestrians are requested to follow all site signage and use alternative routes.
- Access between levels will continue to be available via the adjacent stairs.
- Traffic management measures, exclusion zones and directional signage will be in place to support safe pedestrian movement.

There will be temporary traffic and pedestrian changes along University Drive, St Lucia, as part of site establishment and mobilisation works for the Mayne Hall restoration project.
Affected areas

- Finish: Approximately three weeks after the start date
- Times 6.00am – 6.00pm
Work details
To allow for concreting activities, a section of University Drive will be temporary closed (closest to Mayne Hall), with a stop-go arrangement and traffic controllers in place to ensure the safe movement of vehicles.
A new footpath will be installed along the western side of the upper Forgan Smith Lawn, along with temporary pedestrian crossings across University Drive to maintain safe pedestrian access throughout the project.
The existing site offices at the Mayne Hall site will be temporarily relocated by crane to the upper Forgan Smith Lawn for approximately a week and returned to their original location once the works are complete. There will be elevated construction noise and vehicle movements during these works, including delivery vehicles, flatbed trucks and crane operations.

These works are part of the Mayne Hall restoration project, aimed at returning the building into a space for keynote lectures, music performances and graduations.

From Monday 17 November 2025 there will be parking and traffic changes on Keith Street, St Lucia, to allow for works at the Playhouse Childcare Centre.
This includes intermittent road closures along Keith Street at various stages of works. During these times, a Stop/Go traffic arrangement will be in place to maintain safe traffic flow. A permit for these works has been approved by Brisbane City Council (RC-4061-3).
In addition, the undercover P7 carpark (approximately 30 bays) will be closed for approximately 12 months while works are underway.
The outdoor P7 carpark will remain open to the community.

- The undercover carpark under the Playhouse will be closed
- The footpath on one side of Keith Street will be closed. For safety, pedestrians will be directed to use the opposite side.

The University and UQ Union (UQU) are working together on a staged redevelopment of the Union Complex at St Lucia.
Early works to refurbish Building 21C will begin in November 2025. The University and its contractor are working closely with the UQU to coordinate early works and minimise impacts as much as possible.
This page will be updated with information about any parking, traffic and pedestrian changes as works progress.
Affected areas
- Building 21C, Union Complex and surrounding areas (excluding the REDROOM and Building 21C lift which are open).
When
- Early works: From late November 2025 to mid-2026.
- Work will be carried out between 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (Saturday works as required).
Details and mitigation
Pedestrian access
- Pedestrian access to all three levels of the Union Complex will remain open via the Building 21C lift and stairs.
- There may be times when the stairs need to be closed temporarily, and pedestrian detours will be signed in advance.
- Access to the Building 21C lift and REDROOM will be maintained at all times.
- The stairs in front of the Schonell Theatre (level 2) will be closed and form part of the work site.
Parking and travel
- The motorcycle parking zone and reserved car parking zone outside Building 21C will be closed as these areas will become part of the work site.
- Alternative accessible (PWD) car parks are available at the end of Staff House Road or underneath the UQ Centre. For alternative locations and maps, visit the accessible parking page.
- End of trip facilities in 21C will remain open for the majority of works and notification will be provided ahead of a temporary closure in 2026.
- The open-air bicycle rack, bike repair station and bench seats outside the entrance to the Union Complex will be removed during the Stage 1 works. Visit Cycling at UQ for alternative bike racks and repair stations.
Construction management
- There will be increased truck movements via Union Road and Campbell Place.
- Traffic control and signage will be in place as part of a traffic management plan to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians and road users, in coordination with construction for the new Fitness Centre.
- Safety measures will include construction management plans, protective equipment, signage and barricades. Any asbestos-containing material will be wrapped before being removed from the building for disposal and managed in accordance with legislative requirements.

From Monday 10 November to early 2026, areas of the UQ Sport Athletics Centre will be closed for scheduled refurbishment works.
The athletics track and outdoor training facilities will remain open to the community throughout this period.

- The grandstand, function and administration rooms, canteen, and accessible toilets will be closed for refurbishment (works will be completed in stages)

UQ Sport Fitness Centre construction
UQ is building a new multi-level UQ Sport Fitness Centre as part of its 35-hectare Sport and Recreation Precinct at St Lucia.
During construction, there will be a number of parking, traffic and pedestrian changes in the area. Works will begin from 30 June 2025, with expected completion in 2027.
Affected areas
- The P10 Aquatic Centre Carpark is permanently closed.
- All vehicles entering and exiting the P10 UQ Centre and Synthetic Playing Fields Carpark must use Sir William MacGregor Drive. Vehicle access via Union Road is no longer available.
- Two accessible (PWD) car parks have been temporarily relocated to the front of the UQ Sport Aquatic Centre on Union Road. During main construction, these are expected to be moved to the P10 UQ Centre Carpark due to increased truck movements. Alternative PWD car parks are also available at the P10 UQ Centre and P10 Synthetic Fields Carparks. For alternative locations and maps, visit the accessible parking page.
- A section of the P10 UQ Centre Carpark will be allocated to Aquatic Centre customers.
- Pedestrian access from the P10 UQ Centre Carpark to Union Road, including the UQ Sport Aquatic Centre, is via the stairs or lift in the UQ Centre Carpark and signage is in place.
- A section of car parks along Sir William MacGregor Drive will be closed when required as a truck loading zone.
- Some red zone car parks along Blair Drive have been permanently changed to yellow zone, 2-hour parking (zone number 1472400) to support short-term parking access near the Aquatic Centre.
- A temporary workspace has been established in a fenced-off area in front of the HMBS building. Temporary pedestrian detours will be in place between Union Road and Blair Drive, though access between Union Road and Blair Drive will always remain open. Pedestrians should follow the signage in the area.

Details and mitigation
- We acknowledge the impact on people who park in this area and are reviewing parking options across the campus to optimise availability.
- A 5 minute passenger drop off zone has been introduced on Blair Drive for Aquatic Centre users.
- A section of the P10 UQ Centre car park will be allocated to Aquatic Centre users and signage will be put in place (please be aware this allocation may change during major events).
- Traffic control and signage will be in place as part of a traffic management plan to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians and road users.
- A construction management plan will be in place to ensure safety and minimise noise, dust, vibration and other disruptions as much as possible.
- Notifications will be provided to neighbouring buildings and UQ Sport members ahead of works commencing.
- As construction progresses, there will be changes to traffic and pedestrian access on Union Road. Updates will be published here and notifications will be provided to nearby stakeholders prior to these changes.
