Improving outcomes related to driving cessation for people with dementia and their families. (2008-2010)

Abstract

Dementia affects a person's ability to drive safely and inevitably leads to driving cessation. Retirement from driving for older people has been associated with poor outcomes including depression and loss of valued activities. Research into the needs of older retiring drivers (without dementia) resulted in the development of UQDRIVE (the University of Queensland Driver Retirement Initiative). This study aims to investigate the specific needs of people with dementia related to driving cessation in order to adapt UQDRIVE accordingly. Using qualitative methodology, this study will investigate the driving cessation experiences and needs of people with dementia, family members and health professionals.
