Ultrahigh Carbon Bainitic Steels with Exceptional Properties
Abstract
This project aims to bridge the composition gap within the steel family through designing and developing a novel category of ultrahigh carbon steels that boast exceptional mechanical properties, leveraging the latest scientific advancements. The expected outcome includes several new compositions of bainitic steels, and in-depth understanding of their strengthening and toughening mechanisms. Such research findings present the industry with superior-performing metallic materials at lower cost. Applications of these new steels should be beneficial to increase fuel efficiency via weight reduction in transportation sector, to tool makers, shipbuilding, mining and minerals, and defense industries where ultrahigh strength materials are crucial.
