The neural basis of predictive coding-How the brain does more with feedback

Abstract

You may touch with your hand, but you feel with your brain. However, how the brain links sensation to perception is not as straight forward as it may seem. Indeed, the brain is characterized by extensive feedback connections whose functional roles remain largely unknown. This proposal aims to characterise how the most common feedback circuit in the brain, from the cortex to the thalamus, controls neural activity by developing cutting-edge neurotechnology in a mouse model. The expected outcomes of this project, namely fundamental principles of neural feedback, could provide significant benefits to our basic understanding of the brain thereby placing Australia at the forefront of one of the greatest challenges of modern science.
