Characterising blood oxygenation changes in functional human brain imaging (2026-2029)

Abstract

This project aims to characterise and image the human vasculature in vivo that underlies functional brain mapping techniques, which can blur and mask the accurate mapping of human cognition. This project expects to generate new knowledge in the field of functional imaging and anatomy, physiology, and function of the human brain. Expected outcomes include a detailed map of the blood vessel anatomy of the living human brain, and vascular models of functional brain signals in space and time describing systemic and neurovascular processes. Potential benefits include new technologies for neuroscience and brain physiology research to shed new light onto human cognitive hierarchy and computation.
