Overview
Background
I am an historian of modern Britain with a focus on the intersection between war and politics in the twentieth century.
My first book, Blue Jerusalem: British Conservatism, Winston Churchill and the Second World War was published by Oxford University Press in 2024. It revealed how WWII was as much a "Tory War" as a "People's War" and explored the forgotten Conservative visions for the post-war world developed by right-leaning politicians, thinkers, and journalists during the conflict.
I am currently writing book for Penguin/Allen Lane preliminarily titled Warrior Britain: A Nation in Arms, 1945-1960. This will be a political, cultural, social, and environmental history of British militarism in the Cold War.
I have also written widely on British Conservatism, including the place of Conservatives in the academy.

Research impacts
I have contributed to various discussion on the past and future of Conservatism in both Britain and Australia including with: the Insitute of Economic Affairs, Bright Blue, The Robert Menzies Institute, National Conservatives (Australia), and Liberty Fund.
What little impact I have had has mainly been on my students who, I hope, I have taught to recognise that the future is far more unpredictable than it appears and that it is ok to find the study of history 'fun'.
