Overview
Background
Erin Hayes is a post-doctoral researcher in OzGrav at the School of Mathematics and Physics, University of Queensland in Brisbane. She works to improve our understanding of the (dark) contents and fate of the universe using transient phenomena, including type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and gravitationally lensed supernovae. In light of recent tensions in cosmology which, if physical, indicate that our current best model of the universe is incomplete, Hayes pursues this goal via a two-pronged approach. Firstly, she examines systematic uncertainties in the standardisation of SNe Ia as used in the distance ladder methodology, which is giving the current most precise local cosmological measurements. To validate measurements from the distance ladder, she secondly measures cosmology in the local universe independently of the distance ladder via time-delay cosmography with lensed supernovae. Broadly, she is an expert in the statistical analysis of transients for cosmology, including modelling of time-series data and population studies. The modelling tools she developed have been used for impactful cosmological results.
She completed her PhD in Astronomy as a Gates-Cambridge Scholar at the Institute of Astronomy and Kavli Center for Cosmology, University of Cambridge in 2026.
