Overview

Background

I'm an endocrinologist and obstetric medicine physician and consider myself a clinician researcher. My current research interests are in type 1 diabetes and its complications including glycogenic hepatopathy, and in endocrinopathies of pregnancy. I have received a PhD in engineering, and since switching to the medical field I have conducted several research studies from inception to publication, which involved collaboration with multiple specialties and basic sciences researchers. I’m nimble in conducting research in parallel with my clinical work.

I’ve been an invited speaker at multiple national forums, speaking to a range of audiences, including nursing, general practice, trainees and subspecialty peers (in endocrinology and obstetric medicine, but also other fields including obstetrics and gynaecology).

I enjoy staying abreast of current literature, and this has enabled me to lead and/or contribute to the development of various hospital guidelines and policies, including thyroid management in pregnancy insulin management in hospital including pregnancy and the peripartum period, post bariatric surgery in pregnancy, osteoporosis post cancer and hip fracture quality assurance. I’ve engaged with clinicians across different hospitals and with GP liaison programs to ensure consistency of practice.

Research interests

  • Glycogenic hepatopathy - a complication of type 1 diabetes with hepatomegaly, liver enzyme derangement and persistent lactataemia

I’ve initiated a number of research projects trying to better understand the aetiology of difficult glycaemic control of type 1 diabetes, using niche imaging modalities to understand the contribution of liver glycogen and fat accumulation, and more recently gene testing with a focus on alleles causing glycogen storage diseases. I’m collaborating with surgical teams and with specialists in proton spectroscopy imaging and in glycogen structure basic sciences. Future work will focus on clarifying causation. This work is directly applicable to the cohort of patients with poor type 1 diabetes control who have frequent admissions to our hospital, contributing to significant psychosocial stress and heath care costs.

  • Endocrinopathies in pregnancy

My parallel work in obstetric medicine has me consulting with pregnant women with various endocrinopathies, including type 1 diabetes. I’ve become interested in departmental interventions to improve glycaemic control in type 1 diabetes and have undertaken research to assess the efficacy of these interventions. There remains much opportunity in this area for further improvement in health of mother and baby in pregnancies complicated by type 1 diabetes.
