Environmental change in northern Cenozoic Australia: a multidisciplinary approach (ARC Linkage project administered by the University of NSW) (2009-2012)

Abstract

The ability to anticipate future impacts of environmental change is vital for sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems. Inadequate understanding of the past constrains ability to model the future. Our multi-institutional team of palaeontologists, sedimentologists, geochemists and geochronologists will develop new methods to document change in palaeoenvironments and evolutionary trends in biodiversity, and interpret responses of both to prehistoric climate oscillations in northern Australia. Development in skills, education programs and employment opportunities for north Queensland communities, and training in guild sciences and innovative technologies for students and early career researchers, are primary goals of this project.
