Active Channel Organic Transistors (2011-2013)

Abstract

Plastic or 'organic' electronics are widely viewed as being the key to next generation, low environmental impact high tech electronics and optoelectronics. Organic transistors are of particular import because of their wide spread use in virtually all circuits. In our project we aim to create a new class of active channel organic transistors which are capable of functions other than merely acting as electrical diodes. We will focus on applications such as light emitting transistors and electrochemical ion-to-electron transducers. Our ultimate goal is to produce the world's first electrically pumped organic laser which requires the development of new multi-functional materials and novel transistor architectures with integrated optical gain.
