Multiscale and Multiphase Modeling of Deformable Porous Media (2011-2013)

Abstract

The proposed research aims to advance the state-of-the-art for computer simulations in geomechanics involving multiple scales. This is achieved by accurately modeling critical phenomena at each scale, whilst allowing for the dynamic transfer of information across the scales, enabling strong scale coupling. High resolution numerical methods are used for simulating micro-scale phenomena and the finite element method is used for the macro-scale, combined with a dynamic mesh adaption scheme where the macro- and micro-scales overlap. The proposed numerical approach is applied to a case study of a CO2 sequestration operation in the presence of high in situ stresses. The project will benefit from existing NCRISand MNRFinfrastructure.
